Amazing service and product!

I’m very impressed with the OMP Super Decathlon. Fit and finish is top notch and it was super easy to set up. I took a bit longer to cut out the fake windows and added some smoked poly windows to make it really shine. Flight characteristics are amazing on a 4s. Dial down the rates for scale like flight, or increase them for an all out show stopper! Package was shipped and received one day later. Thanks BuddyRC!

Love the plane! Flys beyond expectations.
I did vent the plane as suggested and still lost the hatch on the maiden flight though. May suggest a hing be added or something to future customers. I’ll check the store to see if I can buy another. If not I’ll be covering the hole.

Thank you for the review and suggestions.

Bad elevator Servo would not maintain center

Terrible elevator servo with changing center, called was recommended to get the FLEX 15 gram servos which fit perfectly and without any issues at All

A good flying airplane but some serious quality issues.

Thoughts on my new BuddyRC Super Decathlon. I was all set to pan this airplane due to several significant quality issues. However, once it is all set up it looks great and flies well.

First, the tail wheel is supposed to be factory mounted on the fuse. However, my tailwheel had been mounted, and then somewhere along the line ripped out and was nowhere to be found. Luckily, I had a tailwheel from a crashed Extreme Flight airplane that was a perfect fit, and it just required some soaking with thin CA to strengthen the holes where the original screws had been ripped out.

Second the tail (vertical fin) was snapped exactly like it was in the two build videos I saw. A relatively easy fix with CA and strengthened when the horizontal tail was installed. Additionally, there was some damage to a bulkhead inside the fuse. It did not compromise the integrity of the airframe but still it was sloppy. Also, the cowling spontaneously developed a crack which I just put some clear tape on to stop it from traveling.

Finally, there are no published control throws or a center of gravity (CG) data. That these critical values are missing is ridiculous. There is no excuse for leaving this data out.

Overall, the covering job was excellent but some of the seaming, cuts, and details could be cleaner. The design of the airplane seems solid and well thought out.

After I had worked my way through these quality issues, I ended up with a beautiful airplane. I hypothesized that the CG should be about 60mm from the leading edge (give or take). I set my throws so that they "looked" right. I settled on:
AIL - 50% throw/65 Expo
ELE- 60% throw/55 Expo
RUD - 100 throw/45 Expo

I also moved all the control push rods inward to the second to the last hole on the servo. I am guessing that a lot of you think that these settings are VERY tame. However, I am not a 3D pilot and prefer a smooth flying aerobatic sport airplane. These settings accomplish that goal. With "less tame" settings the airplane becomes VERY twitchy.

I think this airplane is a lot of fun to fly and is capable of large smooth aerobatics. Very fast roll rates but it is coupled. But one should expect coupling with a high wing airplane. The airplane is easy to take off and land and its ground handling is well mannered. As with any tail dragger you need to use your rudder. I was flying with a 4S 3000 and it had PLENTY of power but was not overpowered. As stated, she is beautifully aerobatic and can also settle down for very docile flight.

Overall, you can end up with a nice airplane despite the issues I describe above. I hope that Buddy RC / OMP fix the quality issues. If so, they would have a great product. However, these quality flaws were alarming to me.

Hi Ben, thank you very much for the valuable feedback. We will definitely make improvements in the future products.

This airplane is just fantastic. What’s not to like? Depending on how you view this airplane you might think initially it’s expensive for its size. When you look at it from the standpoint of it’s a PNP airplane and a balsa airplane it’s a bargain at least to me. I have the Bighorn 49 and now this Decathlon 55. Fit and finish is superb. I will say I added a different 65amp ESC and a 10amp UBEC for piece of mind due to me running on 4s power. It’s been pretty windy lately so I haven’t flown it yet. Control throws are insane. First flights I’d think should be dialed down some. To keep things simple….for me at least and keeping switch assignments down on my iX20 I choose to dial up the expo on elevator and ailerons and keeping rudder 100%. Looking forward to getting this airplane in the air. One last note, the only thing I saw during assembly was the rudder area. It had a small crack in the wood that was easily repaired with a dab of thin CA.
