Working great. Happy with the purchase.
First time with OpenTx and Radiomaster. I am still learning at University of Youtube but have set up and successfully flown 1 airplane already and will transfer others over as I get more comfortable. BuddyRC has been very easy to deal with and shipped items as described and on time. Can't ask for more.
Great service and very fast shipping. The Radiomaster itself is an awesome transmitter. Using it with my old Spektrum receivers and haven't had a problem yet. Even in my giant scale electrics.
This will be unbiased and to be fair, the -minus one star adds up in this way, the touchscreen is unusable as of now 8/21 with OpenTx (EdgeTX seems to have a working touchscreen) now, this is more of a community of OpenTx programmers situation and not really radioMasters fault.
At $200 a lot of people call them “cheap” I don’t really agree with that, is it affordable? Well of course that depends on your situation, but “cheap” infers a lower quality standard and that’s not the case here. Adding up to the minus a star is the ergonomics of this radio, she’s big, I think they might have made it a little more comfortable, having to add the leather grips is a nice touch and I have them, a softer grip around those edges and this wouldn’t be needed, I feel that with better engineered sides with a more slender thickness, the leather grips would be that much more comfortable for long holds. I think the “ratchet system RM used for the throttle side could be made a little robust so it does not “file” itself down over time. There is some talk of the “roller” having slight issues with its accuracy, especially when moving quickly through menus, it tends to “skip” past stopping point the “jump” in reverse. This seems to be common, but, but usually only a problem with super heavy users and I might say 95% of us won’t find this to be an issue even if encountered occasionally.
Again this is not a blowing smoke all praise with no real info behind it like so many I see even here, but not exclusive to BuddyRc certainly.
The good outweighs the small items I mentioned above for sure. The smaller things include the shipping box can be shrouded in the “small” TX16S case which uses the shipping container as a base and just wraps the styrofoam up in a tidy kit, and one item I plan to purchase. It runs around $16 and is a Best Buy. They throw in a nice handle that although is plastic it is foldable and is just a nice addition I switched out immediately. The hall sensored gimbals are a must in any decent radio in todays technically advanced hobbies, any type of mechanical styled gimbals are just too inefficient and inaccurate for today’s better class radios. I’ve been inside this kit more then once and internals are clean and well wired with a clean appearance and well done placing with wire lengths and routing all well placed for future proofing or replacing/upgrading internals. That bring me to upgrades, there are plenty, from the aforementioned grips to light kits to faceplates and CNC replacements. Of course the addition of the JR style box for external modules is excellent and will let you add real power to TX full power TBS and other long range protocol modules.
The screen (even though no touchscreen availability just yet) is nice and bright and readable in daylight (even though you may melt in today’s environment) and with that the upgraded speakers are a great addition and is clear and crisp with great additions with eh ‘hem let’s say some “spirited” and quite funny downloadable sound paks.
The radio does feel solid in hands but again is quite large, if it was made a bit more compact the missing time spent on hand ergonomics would be less of an issue.
Have to talk about software because that’s the indent to use, and OpenTx like other mentioned is adequately robust, being an open source community RM has no control over this side of its system. What they’ve done is made a nice ray-day-oh that is damn near completely future proof, barring some crazy new technology or technical abilities not on the near horizon. It is not Futaba S-FAAST capable, lol but neither are most Futaba radios at the date of this review, and won’t be due to it being a hardware issue, but of course it does Futaba’s common protocol. Fit and finish inside and out was perfectly done on my radio and have not heard anyone say different, these seem to roll out well looked over and tested. The big battery compartment means you have a nice wide choice and this is one of those small but meaningful things RM has included.
I don’t know of too many people “on the fence” with these any longer due to their popularity and praise these get from across the board, room, country and world. Being able to change the face for $16 can basically give you a whole new look a year down the line, replace due to scratches or wear, means you never have to get bored of your RadioMaster TX16S.
Finally, I have had zero issues with the hardware side and that along with making the implementation of software mating to the radio is where RadioMaster has shined and certainly have done a great job engineering this item.
The Open-tx.org software can be challenging, have patience and spend time on YouTube and the university (OpenTx Uni). I personally was ready to throw in towel, but the reward was certainly worth the work and when you get your first model up and running, you won’t look back. I cannot stress how satisfying it can be.
This radio has been an excellent purchase and well-worth the money. The Opentx system allows programing limited only by your imagination, the multi-module lets you to easily use receivers from numerous manufactures, and the Radiomaster receivers are CHEAP and RELIABLE. Thumbs up!
